Return to school

Class 2

We were delighted to welcome our children back in January and 2023 was a fresh start for all of us as we moved to our new campus at Dominican Convent School. The children are now benefitting from a full day of school as well as a comprehensive curriculum. They have made new friends at school where they are integrated with the other children in the classroom. Despite the difficulty of getting up earlier than they are used to, the children have adapted very well to their new normal.

In addition to a full curriculum, our children will enjoy going on excursions and camps this year and will be able to take part in a variety of extra-mural programmes. The activities include swimming, judo, basketball, marimba and choir. Thank you for your support and for making this possible!

News from a Three2Six alumni

Jemi
January was the month for matric results and with this came a lot of joy and pride for our past learner Jemi and his mother! After studying at Sacred Heart College for four years, he graduated from high school with six distinctions! He now wishes to go to university to study medicine or astrophysics.

Keep flying high Jemi, we are very proud of what you have achieved since leaving Three2Six.

Partnership with the United Nations

At the end of 2022, we were extremely excited to launch a video in collaboration with the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. It was released on 18 December, which is International Migrants Day. It celebrates the migrant and local communities coming together and moving beyond prejudice to work towards a common goal.

The video shows the community garden initiative that started last year at our former Observatory Girls’ Primary School campus. It brought the Three2Six and host school children, staff and parents together weekly on a rotational basis to work together to maintain the garden. The produce from the project was shared among the two communities and used in the Three2Six feeding programme. Watch the video.

FMSI logo
FMSI, the Marist Foundation for International Solidarity, is one of our partner organisations and its main focus is the support of educational initiatives around the world.
These initiatives are promoted through its newsletter and the latest edition features our dedicated advocacy officer. She talks about the efforts made by the project to advocate for the rights of refugee and migrant children, as well as the circumstances of the Three2Six children and the advocacy-related challenges that have to be overcome.

Fundraising update

The Three2Six Project has seen exciting changes in the last few weeks, and the biggest of these is the move to offer a full day’s education to the children in the project. This new opportunity brings with it a new fundraising goal of over R9 million! Thanks to the generosity of our loyal donors, 50 percent of this funding is already committed and we are working hard to raise the additional 50 percent of the budget from local and international donors.

Susan de Witt, the Innovative Finance Senior Advisor at the Bertha Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Graduate School of Business in Cape Town, says: “Between foundation corporate social investment and private giving, South Africans contribute billions of rands each year to developmental programmes and causes. Much of this funding provides essential support to worthy causes.”

Three2Six is grateful to the corporations, foundations and individuals who continue to support the project.
These include:

Breadsticks Foundation
Carolyn and John Stremlau
Eileen and Jim Hornor
Harris Matthews Charitable Foundation
HCI Foundation
Investec
Jell Foundation
Johannesburg Stock Exchange
Kennedy - Hanly Foundation
Maryanne and Patrick Minson
Misean Cara
Raskob Foundation
