Three2Six - a bridging education for refugee and migrant children in South Africa - featured by the Vatican’s Migrants and Refugees Section

Since 1914, the Church celebrates annually the World Day of Migrants and Refugees (WDMR) on the last Sunday of September. This year, WDMR will be celebrated on 26 September with Towards an ever wider “we” as the theme. WDMR is an occasion to “express concern for different vulnerable people on the move, to pray for them as they face many challenges; and to increase awareness about the opportunities that migration offers”.

In the months leading up to the celebration of WDMR, the Vatican’s Migrants and Refugees Section runs a campaign during which it publishes videos on the year’s theme to build momentum towards WDMR. Thanks to the support of the Migrants and Refugees Office of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC), Three2Six was identified by the Vatican to be part of this campaign as an African project that symbolizes a “society in colours”.

This month, the Vatican’s Migrants and Refugees Section features the Three2Six project in two videos that showcase the activities carried out on its campuses and how it brings together the local and refugee communities, who work hand in hand and cooperate, despite the background differences between them. The two videos can be viewed by clicking on the following links: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8n5Hrv-tx-0 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evFv_MMYFXA

Mark Potterton, the Three2Six director, is thrilled to be able to show the work achieved since 2008 by the Project, an educational initiative that promotes social justice for refugee and migrant children, social cohesion between the local and refugee communities, and the realization of refugee and migrant children’s right to education. This is in the context of increasing hostility against migrants and refugees throughout the world.

To help increase awareness around refugee related issues and change mindsets and discourses around migration, the project encourages all to use its “Talking and Thinking about Refugees” resource. It is available on its website: https://three2six.co.za/talking-and-thinking-about-refugees/ and also has an offline version which can be accessed here: https://www.three2six.co.za/ttr/navigation.html.
