A theatre programme for young performers
|
|
At the end of January, our Grade 4 and 5 students embarked on an exciting journey into the world of theatre, thanks to our partner at the National Children’s Theatre. Through a multi-week programme called “Musicals in schools”, our students are discovering the art of acting. Guided by the Theatre’s passionate facilitators, they are working towards a performance of the Lion King play, which they will present mid-March.

Visitors
|
|
|
|
During the month of February, we welcomed visits from our long-time funder and partner, the HCI Foundation, as well as from Rony Ahlfeldt - the global advisor at the Economato Marist Institute in Rome, Br John and Diana Messerschmidt on a separate occasion. On both visits, we were excited to give our visitors a full tour of our new campus, the Windybrow Arts Centre.

To make the visits extra special, our students prepared a variety of performances, including dancing, poetry inspired by the five Marist values, and short acting pieces.
|
|
|
|
Our guests took time to engage with our students, teachers, and management team, creating meaningful moments of connection. One visitor even stepped onto the mat and joined the students during their judo practice! A warm thank you to everyone who took the time to visit and connect with our community.

Afternoon programme
|
A large group of Three2Six students who left the project last year are now in Grades 6 and 7 at two of our partner local schools, Observatory Girls’ Primary School and Yeoville Community School. To support this important transition, we have launched an afternoon programme that provides them with homework support.
|
Due to space constraints, the programme is currently running only for our alumni attending Observatory Girls’. Once we secure a suitable space for the children at Yeoville Community, we will extend the programme there too.
|
|
Three times a week, our dedicated teachers visit the school to provide the students with an hour of academic support. Staying closely connected with our alumni allows us to follow their progress, and we are pleased to see that they are doing very well.

A huge thank you to Play it Forward Jozi for their generous donation of judogi to our project. These will make the children’s weekly judo practices so much more comfortable and enjoyable, helping them train, learn, and grow with confidence.

Advocacy update
|
- Submission to the Department of Home Affairs
At the end of 2025, the Department of Home Affairs opened the draft revised White Paper on Citizenship, Immigration and Refugee Protection for public comments. After carefully reviewing the document, the project prepared a submission focusing on the refugee protection aspects of the White Paper. The submission highlights both the positive elements and the elements that raise concerns regarding the rights of refugees if this White Paper was to be adopted.

- National Inter-Agency Working Group on unaccompanied and separated children and other vulnerable children (NIAWG) meeting

The NIAWG meetings are chaired by Save the Children South Africa, the Centre for Child Law at the University of Pretoria, and Terre des Hommes Germany. As this was the first convening since 2024, it provided a valuable platform for organisational updates.
|
Terre des Hommes Germany led a discussion on the key issues that the Working Grroup would like to prioritise for its advocacy work for the year. Further engagements will take place to determine joint activities.
|
|
Participating included Lawyers for Human Rights, the South African Human Rights Commission, the Scalabrini Centre of Cape Town, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and Red Cross South Africa.
